From September 2020 - April 2021 we worked with members of the central and South West team at the National Trust to look at how they engage with young people and where this could be done better.

Initially this was centred around site visits to Tyntesfield, Leigh Woods and Durham, but adapted due to Covid-19 to wider engagement with nature, beauty and history.

Six creatives from Rising’s community were recruited as consultants, along with one visual and one audio documentor. We then hosted three context sessions with speakers from across the National Trust and partners looking at conservation, Open Days, existing youth engagement, heritage and more. Following reflection on these sessions the group came together and created three responses to various aspects of our discussion.

IMPACT

The recommendations from the six consultants were compiled into a report alongside a series of thought-provoking creative responses shared internally within the National Trust.

Following this project, Rising supported the National Trust to set up a Young People’s Challenge Group, which is co-chaired by two members of the Rising community and supported by us.

“Jess as our partner at Rising has been integral throughout the whole process. A really expert facilitator and her knowledge and understanding of working with young people has been crucial, not only in reaching out to this audience but also in the way we’ve shaped this pilot. She’s also really had a clear understanding of our aims and has really listened and responded to the needs of the young people but also us at the National Trust.”

– Phillipa Percival Senior Programming and Partnership Officer, Tyntesfield
