Following the historic announcement that one of Bristol’s major institutions was changing it’s name from the ‘Colston Hall’  to ‘Bristol Beacon’ as a response to the toppling of the Colston Statue and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement

Over six months, three young creatives from Rising’s community worked with design agency Saboteur on the look and feel of the new branding to launch Bristol Beacon.

The explosive new branding clearly illustrates the potential, power and scope of the work we do with so many organisations; it shows what can happen when organisations step aside, get out of their own way and allow young people to lead. Which we know many organisations find it hard to do – even those who are seen to be doing it.

Beacon takeover:
Make space for rising

In February 2022, we co-hosted ‘Make Space for Rising’ at Bristol Beacon. The event was produced by Rising artists Alexa Ledecky, Jasmine Thompson and Rosa Ter Kuile – with the support Sophia Harari, and formed part of the Bristol Beacon’s #MakeSpaceForMusic campaign –  introducing the city to Bristol Beacon’s re-brand.

The event itself felt like an opportunity to celebrate the young people in our community that are the heart of Bristol’s creative culture and witness the journey to transformation that Bristol Beacon is at the beginning of.

Voice: Young creatives setting the tone for major institutions

1.

Visibility: Over 400 people came to Make Space for Rising and most of them were brand new to our work and hadn’t been to Bristol Beacon before

2.

Change: Were part of a moment in decolonisation for the city we were founded in, as more organisations look to face up to their colonialist histories

3.

Awards: We won Gold in the 2022 Transform Awards Europe ‘Best visual identity by a charity, NGO or NFP’

4.

Artist Development: The opportunity has given particularly Rosa ter Kuile a national platform with her illustration and graphic design work

“The past year for Bristol Beacon has been such a significant moment of change – so I am thrilled to be part of the conversations and creative direction around that. I just feel very grateful to Rising, the Beacon, Saboteur, Jazz and Greg for making this all happen.”
